Roof runner

Recently I stumbled upon a burglar outfit that was featured by Lotro Fashion and created by Acromir of Crickhollow. The setting around this outfit is on the rooftops of Bree. Because I loved that outlook I asked him for directions on how to get up there, and without giving away any spoilers, he encouraged me to start roof-running! Though many of you have gone there before, it was a completely new adventure to me. It’s almost like trying to figure out a puzzle and having to fit the pieces together. I had a great time and will probably continue to spend some more time on the rooftops, because I didn’t get on top of all of them yet. This outfit is a tribute to Acromir who encouraged me to figure it out! Thank you!

The head piece in this outfit was obtained before Update 5, when bartering with other class vendors in the Ettenmoors was still possible, even if you couldn’t equip the item for lacking the right rank. You were able to barter for the item and then use it cosmetically through the wardrobe. Regrettably it is no longer possible to barter for PvMP items that you do not have the correct class and rank for.

If you want to know where a certain armour piece or cosmetic comes from, you can look it up in the Lorebook, by typing its name into the search box. You can equip any piece of armour cosmetically through the wardrobe, even armour that is not meant for your class or level.

Head: Helm of the Hidden Dagger, black dye (Ettenmoors barter, burglar rank 6)

  1. Gorgeous theme of a roof runner :D I’ve had a go at roof running in Bree and it’s brilliant fun trying to reach all the places and watch other players look very confused when they spot you.

    I’m glad to hear you had a fun time roof-running. I’ve spent many an hour falling into the pits between building trying to find a way to difficult stuff :D.

    First off, if you want to have some fun with roof-running, find a fun route and practice it until you’re confident. Then bring your Captain (if you have one) or a friend (if you don’t) and organize a roof-top kinship/friend party. Summoning Horns are the bomb! I’ve seen some really funny reactions from baby lvl 10s watching 15 or so lvl 75s lighting off fireworks on top of the Bree Jailhouse :P

    Now that you’ve had some time roof-running, and you’re able to handle basic jumps, you’re ready for the advanced stuff. Here are a few challenges that you can use to stretch your abilities, in order of difficulty.

    PIT ESCAPE
    I’d recommend that you deliberately throw yourself into the pit behind the Town Hall (~ 30.6s 50.8w). I end up in this pit quite a lot, and this is one of the few that is actually possible to escape. Once you figure it out, you’ll save a lot of time using /stuck or teleporting out. This isn’t all that fun, but it’s a useful skill.

    BREE JAIL
    This is probably the first building that presented too much of a challenge. There are a few tricky walls you have to run across, and a jump that doesn’t look possible. Also, as I said above, it’s a great place for a party.

    HUNTING LODGE
    The next challenging step is the Bree Hunting Lodge. This is a pretty hard building to find, and is a fun challenge on it’s own. However, it’s also an important stepping-stone to…

    AUCTION HALL
    This is the most challenging building I’ve managed yet. It doesn’t look possible, but trust me, it is. To get there, you have to get to the Hunting Lodge. One of the things that makes it so hard is that you have to jump on invisible walls.

    The devs placed invisible objects that prevent people on the ground from going places they’re not supposed to. This is why there are some 2-foot walls that you can’t jump on a horse :P. However, these objects only go so high, and you can jump on top of them with skill. The only problem is that if you don’t hit these exactly right, you slide into an inescapable pit.

    Oh I’ve been running around on rooftops of Bree (and other places you’re not meant to be able to get to) for ages. :D I love being on top of the AH. They keep scuppering it, but people keep finding a way around. Let’s see….

    It used to be a short hop that required a horse, using a table outside the hunting lodge. Then they removed the table.

    So then people found a way to get up by using the ‘no enter buildings before dismounting’ thing by opening a door, mounting, and then jumping towards the entrance – because of not being able to get in, you ended up on the roof and could begin a long trek. Then they turned on the ‘automatic dismount’ thing.

    Soooo people found a handy barrel to jump on and run up a wall in the alley leading down to the hunting lodge and got up that way. They removed the barrel.

    We’re now left with a rather long route that requires one very specifically timed jump off the town hall roof, where if you miss you end up on the ground.

    The bit I find hardest is when you have to drop onto the top of a wall running from one building down to the hunting lodge. I very often land on that slightly wrong and about half the time I do that, I end up on the ‘inside’ and have to port out. That’s my main problem and I can’t yet find a way to avoid having to run on that particular wall.

    My personal philosphy is that they actually were hoping players would find these areas. Sure it gets a little messy up there where the roofs join together, but if we were never meant to see it, why are the tops of the roofs so detailed? I mean come on… there are tiled chimneys up there that you can’t possibly see from the ground!

    It’s a nice outfit, but I don’t think you’d be very successful at being stealthy up there with such a bight colour. :)

      You know, you can run along the wall that runs along the platform where the LM and RK trainer building is. This eliminates that tricky jump from town hall. Also, the barrel is still there near the Hunting Lodge… just in a different place. Just saying…

        Interesting. You guys don’t do it the same way I do. That wall you run along to get to the Hunting Lodge? If you look to your right while on it, there’s a building with a blue roof. I get to that building from the scholar’s stair archives.

        I found this route after several tries falling off that **** **** wall to the hunting lodge :P

        Heh I tried that wall run and ended up falling through a building into a very tiny space that I coudln’t get out of. :)

        Also… the barrel outside the hunting lodge isn’t in the right place to jump from, and neither is the one further up by the fallen pillar. :) Or at least I couldn’t get where I needed to from there. ;)

        I’ve made it to the roofs by jumping from the barrel next to the fallen pillar. You just gotta figure out how to do it…

    • I highly recommend you check Devonna’s excellent guide for the jacket. The jacket is also available as a boe lvl75 drop from the new Isengard instance cluster, but appears with a different name (check auction house, medium armour, chest lvl75, something-crus). The cloak is from the “Finish the Abominations” quest. There is a parallel quest “Redeem the Abominations” which yields a similar cloak, without the bloody details. You cannot do both quests and have to make choice for either one.
